Scorpion Mezcal Anejo 5 yearNo, we do not have a crystal ball, but sometimes it does seem a bit like that, when we predict future winners! Scorpion Mezcal wins Platinum Medals.

In April 2004 Edward F. Nesta and I wrote about Scorpion Mezcal and knew that even back then, that someday this excellent mezcal would be winning awards, when we wrote about the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 3 year old, “it really was clear that this was a superior mezcal to be savored and enjoyed by those who appreciate a fine, aged, blended scotch. This is definitely a sipping mezcal, much too good to be mixed in a cocktail; drink it neat or with a splash of water to truly appreciate the nuances of this exceptional mezcal.” In that article, we also wrote about the Scorpion Mezcal Silver 1 year, the Scorpion Mezcal Reposado, and the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 1 year.

Scorpion Mezcal Anejo 5 yearIn October 2005, Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 5 Year Gran Reserva and Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 7 Year Gran Reserva were awarded Platinum Medals from the Beverage Testing Institute’s (BTI) International Review of Spirits. Standing out among 52 tequilas and mezcals that were entered, BTI called them “superlative” and awarded 96 points to the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 5 Year Gran Reserva and 97 points to the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 7 Year Gran Reserva.

Scorpion Mezcal is imported from Oaxaca, Mexico by Caballeros, Inc, who recently introduced the rare Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 5 Year Gran Reservas and Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 7 Year Gran Reservas, that are made from 100% agave mezcal, are artisan made, hand-numbered, and aged in oak barrels. The Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 5 Year Gran Reserva is double distilled and the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 7 Year Gran Reserva is triple distilled, allowing for smooth, rich flavor. They are beautifully bottled in heavy French glass, and of course, there are large signature scorpions at the bottom of each bottle, because Master Distiller and Producer, Douglas French says, “worms are for wimps.” With the latest awards, it is clear that he knows what he is doing!

Scorpion Mezcal 7 yearI tried both the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 5 Year Gran Reservas and the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 7 Year Gran Reserva, and they really were very well crafted, with almost cognac-like noses and a long sweet finish. With limited quantities available, and a price tag of around $180 for the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 5 Year Gran Reserva and $220 the Scorpion Mezcal Añejo 7 Year Gran Reserva, these mezcals are meant to be savored and would make perfect gifts for the mezcal collector.

Congratulations to Scorpion Mezcal on winning their platinum awards!
