David Garfield - Stretchin Outside The Box

Sensational is the word that immediately came to mind as I listened to Contemporary Jazz keyboardist David Garfield – Stretchin’ Outside The Box release that hit the street on September 27, 2021. The sixth, and last, in David Garfield’s Outside The Box series, the double CD release has 24 fabulous tracks totaling over 137 minutes of listening pleasure and features an amazing roster of top musicians. Joining David Garfield are Chuck Loeb, Rick Braun, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Eric Marienthal, and that is just the tip of the iceberg of the talent. I highly recommend giving this stellar release many a listen.

Disc 1: Waiting For Your Love (Extended), Safe Water, I Won’t Back Down (Instrumental), Shufflin’, Rainbow Seeker, Rocket Man, Teen Town, Hunting Heads, Lovin’ You (Remix), Winning Waves, Pirate’s Cove, Tune For Tony (Extended)

Disc 2: Prophecy (Extended), Pool of Friendship, Sweetness, Sir Charles, My Favorite Things (Extended), Pool of Friendship (Remix), Go Home (Jungle Mix), Cousin Vinnie, Creatchy Stomp OTB, Harvest Time (Electric Extended), I Can Let You Go Now (Instrumental), Remembering Carlos Vega

David Garfield produced, arranged, and performed on the release, which was released on the Creatchy Music label.

Disc 1 provides 64.22 minutes of music spread out over 12-tracks, and there are many great tracks including I Won’t Back Down (instrumental), which David dedicates to Tom Petty. Joining David are Michael Lington on saxophone, Tim Pierce (guitar), Paul Franklin (pedal steel guitar), Tony Pullizi (guitar), Chase Duddy (drums), Chris Trujillo (percussion), Sam Porcaro (bass), and Gussie Miller (vocals).

Another highlight is Rocket Man dedicated to Jerry Scheff and features the fabulous vocals of Jason Scheff, who makes this song his own. Joining David and Jason are Steve Procaro on keyboards), Oscar Seaton on drums, and James Harrah on guitar.

Continuing the magic is Lovin’ You (remix) which David dedicated to the Reyes family and features the gorgeous vocals of Lilliana do los Reyes, Walfredo Reyes, Jr. (drums), Daniel de los Reyes (percussion), and Kamar de los Reyes (vocals).

Disc 1 concludes with Tune for Tony (Extended) which David dedicated to Tony Williams and Michael Brecker. Joining David on this stunning track is Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Gregg Bissonette (drums), Michael Brecker (saxophone), Randy Brecker (trumpet), Steve Lukather (guitar), Jimmy Johnson (bass), and Will Lee (bass). The list goes on when it comes to great tracks on Disc 1, however I only name a few to whet your appetite.

Disc 2 also has 12-tracks, has 72.46 minutes of incredible music, and is off to a fabulous start with the opening track, Prophecy (Extended), which David dedicated to his sisters Joan and Ann. The track has a powerful drum intro before segueing into David’s masterful keyboards accented with some stellar sax from Eric Marienthal. Also playing on this track are Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Steve Gadd (drums), Michael Landau (guitar), Carlitos del Puerto (bass), Jimmy Johnson (bass), and Lenny Castro (percussion).

There are numerous standouts on Disc 2 including the track, Cousin Vinnie, which is stripped down wonderful with David joined by Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, and David Paich on keyboards. Vinnie Colaiuta gets the dedication on this one.

Disc 2 closes with the track Remembering Carlos Vega dedicated to the talented Cuban-born, Los Angeles based drummer Carlos Vega (1956-1998). Talk about a fabulous finish; David pulls out all the stops on this track, which features 16 incredibly talented drummers in homage to the esteemed Carlos Vegas. Drummers include Jonathan Lundberg, Bennie Rodgers II, Gianluca Palmieri, Ulf Geist, Khari Parker, Oscar Seaton, James Jackson, Garin Poliahu, John "JR" Robinson, Gregg Bissonnette, Jeff Olson, Abe Laboriel, Jr., Vinnie Colaiuta, Gary Novak, Steve Gadd, and Jimmy Branley.
