A Sng at Twilight -Gordana Rashovich, Nicholas Carriere, Brian Murray at Westport Country Playhouse = By EricksonWe attended the opening night of the Noël Coward play, A Song at Twilight at the Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut. The play directed by Mark Lamos, starring Broadway Veterans Mia Dillon, Brian Murray, and Gordana Rashovich, with Yale School of Drama Graduate Nicholas Carrière runs until May 17, 2014. The 2014 season, which marks the 84th season of performances at the Westport Country Playhouse, looks to be another stellar season of solid line-ups with plays A Song at Twilight, Sing For Your Shakespeare, Nora, Things We Do For Love, and Intimate Apparel. We cannot wait to experience the rest of the 2014 season!

Noël Coward’s play, A Song at Twilight, set in a luxurious hotel in Switzerland in 1965 is an insightful and retrospective look into past lives and secrets kept. It invites the audience to not just look at how things appear on the surface, but rather to peer deeper as the plot unfolds one layer at a time.

Witty, fast-paced, humorous, and often acerbic dialogue keeps the play deftly moving along under the directorship of Mark Lamos, Artistic Director of the Westport Country Playhouse, and the set design is pitch perfect.

Brian Murray delivers a commanding performance as the highly renowned and esteemed writer Sir Hugo Latymer, now in the twilight years of his life, as does Mia Dillon who delivers a convincing performance at his German-born wife, Lady Hilde Latymer, his former secretary and who has been married to him for the past 20 years, and Gordana Rashovich who does justice to the part of the former mistress of his youth who returns for a visit and forever changes how the surface now appears. Broadway veterans all, they clearly make their indelible mark on the last play that Noël Coward wrote. Yale School of Drama Graduate Nicholas Carrière as the waiter Felix, rounds out the ensemble with his charm and delightful dialogue filled with innuendo.

The Westport Country Playhouse named as "Theatre Company of the Year" in December 2013 by The Wall Street Journal, opened in the 1930s in a transformed 1835 cow barn, which has, and continues to attract, a "who’s who" of prominent actors. Looking at the framed posters of past shows that line the lobby walls was like entering an encyclopedia of the arts. A few of the many renowned actors who have appeared on the stage there include Ethyl Barrymore, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Don Ameche, Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy, Jane Fonda, Danny Aiello, Blythe Danner, Jill Clayburgh, Richard Dreyfus, Whoopi Goldberg, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Redgrave, Gene Wilder, and Westport residents Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman.

"Westport Country Playhouse, a not-for-profit theater, serves as a cultural nexus for patrons, artists and students and is a treasured resource for the State of Connecticut.  There are no boundaries to the creative thinking for future seasons or the kinds of audiences and excitement for theater that Westport Country Playhouse can build."
