Executive Producers were Andy Drudy and Neal Richardson on the UK-based Splash Point Records label. I met the renowned British guitarist, singer, songwriter Andy Drudy several years ago in London through a mutual friend, Neal Richardson, Managing Director of Splash Point Records label and was impressed with Andy as a person, as well as by his musical background and his talent. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to listen to Andy play live at clubs, as well as on many of the releases that Edward F. Nesta or I have reviewed in the Music Scene including: Sue Richardson - Fanfare, Sue Richardson - Emergence, and Liane Carroll - Standard Issue. Professionally trained at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California founded by Tommy Tedesco, where his tutors included Joe Diorio, Ron Eschete, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Eddie Van Halen, Andy is a powerhouse. He is a musician’s musician, a guitarist who is equally at home writing and composing for television, radio, and films, as he is doing production work, or out playing gigs. Throughout the years his friend Neal Richardson kept asking Andy when he was going to record a release of his own, yet although Andy found time to write for other projects, writing for himself was another matter. It was while spending time in Melbourne, Australia, that he finally picked up his pen and paper and started writing songs for himself, which he later finished in Eastbourne. The resultant songs became the base for his debut solo 5-track brilliant release, The Andy Drudy Disorder – The Blues Civilisation. Witty lyrics, stellar guitar work, a foot-tapping pounding beat, combined with Andy’s husky raspy vocals enchants; he reels you in with his edgy, contemporary blues that starts with the opening track, St. Salutious. With lyrics that begin, “I’m living on the south west side of nowhere, in a broke down house with a broke down car out on the drive, and I’m thinking ‘bout taking me a wife...” Andy sets the storytelling stage, and you cannot wait to hear how this little number is going to end. He slows the pace a bit, and continues the groove with the track Jesus Never Take Me Alive. Switching pace again, he picks the pace up a bit with the catchy track, Just Give Me a Slow Blues, which has some really fantastic guitar work and when Andy sings, “…no matter what you do, you’re walking on a thin line…” it just does not get much better than this. Paul Francis on bass, and Adam Bushell on drums, join Andy on the track, Tell Me What You Want, which is one of my favorite tracks on the release, where the lyrics, “If you tell me what you want, I’ll show you what I got in my box …” are slow, seductive, and captivating. The closing track, Scallywag, is a gorgeous instrumental piece with old-timey quick tempo blues rhythm, featuring interesting picked guitar riffs as Andy’s fingers fly over the guitar getting a little help on the track from the talented musicians, Chris Hill on bass, and Alex Reeves on drums. From beginning to end, The Andy Drudy Disorder – The Blues Civilisation is brilliant; however, one does wish that there were just a few more songs on it in order to spend a bit more time getting to know the music and the vision of the talented Andy Drudy. Now that his debut solo release is behind him, perhaps Neal Richardson should pick up the refrain of, “So, when are going to write a follow-up release?” Visit the Splash Point Records website to watch the video clip previews of The Andy Drudy Disorder – The Blues Civilisation.
