The 199-room and suite Sheraton Aleppo Hotel
opened in late 2007 in Aleppo,
Syria, and is your home away from home. The hotel has eight
restaurants, an outdoor pool, a fitness center, a sauna, boutiques, and
is
centrally located just 15 minutes from the Aleppo
International Airport
and major cultural treasures including the Citadel and the Old
Market (suq) of Aleppo.
While I was attending the Silk
Road Festival, held annually in Syria since 2002, I stayed at the
Sheraton Aleppo Hotel in September 2010, which occupies an entire city block,
and where I felt like I was sleeping with history. During the construction of
the hotel, they uncovered ancient ruins on the property, which they have
preserved, and are open for visitors to tour and enjoy. I took advantage of
this prime location and I strolled through the ruins soaking up the historic atmosphere.

Ruins at Sheraton Aleppo Hotel
The majestic lobby featured a
comfortable seating area with a large flat-screen TV showing continuous movies,
an inviting lobby bar, and a well-appointed business center with free Internet
access. The VIP service started at check-in and continued throughout my stay.

Lobby
My spacious king bed
guestroom featured the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper TM Bed dressed with a white duvet,
blue bed skirt, and gold throw that was
in sharp contrast to the dark wood headboard. Nightstands held a telephone as
well a clock radio and master controls for easy access from the bed for all of
the lighting in the room.

Guestroom
The large window was
attractively dressed with ivory sheers and blue and yellow striped window
treatments, gold framed paintings graced the walls, and a blue and gold
patterned carpet anchored the color scheme of the room. Thoughtful seating
included a red velvet upholstered chair flanking a desk with lamp and a supply
of stationery. Directly in front of the desk was a comfortable blue corduroy
armchair, and in the corner of the room, there were two brown corduroy chairs and
an ottoman flanking a round table with a selection of magazines.
The brown marble bathroom
featured a vanity with sink and a large tri-fold mirror, a combination shower
and tub, toilet, and a bidet. Bathroom amenities included a hairdryer and a
selection of Sheraton toiletries. In-room amenities included hi-speed Internet
access and Wi-Fi access for a fee, a mini-bar, a separate refrigerator,
coffeemaker with assorted teas and coffees, a large Philips television, complimentary
shoeshine service, two separate closets with additional drawers, and a safe.
The hotel has eight dining
options, and I had an enjoyable dinner at The
Silk Road, which features Mediterranean cuisine, buffet-style, as well as à
la carte dining. The bright and airy contemporary restaurant had a wall of
windows dressed with Roman shades, a white tray ceiling featured double-tiered
chandeliers that illuminated the room, attractive paintings graced the striped
wallpaper walls, upholstered high-backed chairs flanked wood tables dressed
with white runners, planter boxes filled with pretty flowering plants and large
potted plants added visual appeal throughout the restaurant.

The Silk Road
One of the highlights of my
dinner was the broiled haddock served in a lemon sauce with rice pilaf and a
mélange of vegetables, paired with a lovely Chateau Ksara Réserve du Couvent,
2007, from Bekka Valley, Lebanon.

The Sheraton Aleppo Hotel is
perfect for business or leisure travelers with its desirable location just
minutes away from history and the hustle and bustle of city life, yet seems
miles away with its relaxing ambience throughout the hotel.
