Jewels of Ocean - The Most Precious Jewels in the World captures the image of romance and exotic treasures from the sea, which is what Raymond Hakimi envisioned when he named his company. His family has been in the jewelry business since 1845, and spending the afternoon trying on exquisite pieces of jewelry, I kept thinking of the song, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," and wanted to add the words: South Sea Pearls, Rubies, Emeralds, and Sapphires, to the lyrics.
Speaking with Raymond Hakimi in his office overlooking Fifth Avenue and Saint Patrick's Cathedral, I learned that although Jewels of Ocean creates designs in diamonds and colored gemstones, they specialize in South Sea Pearls, which was the inspiration for the name of the company, and while all gems are special, pearls are unique, as they are the only living gems. Unlike other precious gemstones that must first be mined, cut, and polished, pearls, created by an irritation in a living organism, are ready to use without any enhancement when the oyster is opened.
While diamonds are graded by the three Cs: cut, clarity, and carat, pearls are graded by type: Freshwater, Saltwater, and South Sea and Tahitian pearls which are considered to be the most valuable; surface: the cleaner the better, meaning free of irregularities, cracks, blemishes, and other disfigurements; shape: ringed, baroque, drop, button, off-round, and round; color, size, nacre, and luster which is the brilliance of the pearl, and is graded from A, AA, AA+, to the highest category of AAA.
I love brooches, and I tried on a stunning gold South Sea pearl and pave diamond brooch set in 18-karat white gold, as well as an exquisite brooch of gold South Sea pearls and citrine gemstones, both of which displayed not only the craftsmanship of the artist that went into creating the designs, but also the high quality of the pearls and gemstones used. Another design that showed the quality of the workmanship was a brooch of overlapping mother of pearl "petals" with a pearl center that when turned over revealed beautiful 18-karat white gold filigree "petals" which held the design together.
What I especially appreciated was the timeless elegance of the brooches, which were both classic and contemporary, and as Raymond so aptly stated, "jewelry is the personal property of a woman, and is a personal legacy that you can pass on for generations." Thinking about my own collection of family heirloom jewelry purchased by my grandfathers for my grandmothers, and by my father for my mother, and then handed down to me. I completely understood the lasting legacy of a gift of jewelry that keeps on giving.
Although Raymond showed me wonderful jewelry treasures, it was a delicate blue sapphire and pave diamond ring set in 18-karat white gold that caught my eye, and I felt like Cinderella when I slipped the ring on my finger and it fit perfectly! This was not simply a ring; it was a work of art, with fascinating rounded ledges set in diamonds to showcase the gorgeous deep blue sapphire. Alas, like Cinderella at the end of the evening, I had to remove the ring and replace it on the black velvet tray.
Raymond next dazzled me with his collection of sparkling diamond earrings including hanging heart shaped earrings studded with diamonds that would definitely turn heads in any well-dressed crowd, as well as bracelets, and necklaces, that any woman would want to add to her collection.
Another "discovery" was a sapphire and diamond bracelet with matching sapphire and diamond drop earrings; as well as a diamond and 18-karat white gold necklace and matching bracelet set that caught the light with the slightest move of my wrist or my neck.
When I asked Raymond what made Jewels of Ocean - The Most Precious Jewels in the World special, besides the interesting family history beginning in Valenza, Italy as merchants supplying stones to manufacturers, as they had access to mines in Western and Eastern Europe, and then ultimately designing their own award-winning jewelry line in 1920, he replied that their jewelry is innovative, creative, and exclusive. Each piece of jewelry is created like a piece of art with a high caliber of workmanship that makes the pieces timeless and a good investment. In addition to their ready to wear jewelry collection, for the ultimate in luxury, they also create custom, one-of-a-kind jewelry.
