Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York. Sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels, the theme was A Night in the Far East, with stunning décor, cocktails, dinner, and a special performance by the advanced students, followed by dessert and dancing. A few of the many notables at the ball included David and Julia Koch, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Lisa Rinehart, Kelly Rutherford, and Carolina Herrera.

Honorary Chairmen Coco Kopelman, Elizabeth R. Miller, Liz Peck, Betsy Pitts; Chairmen Diana DiMenna, Julia Koch, Jenny Paulson, Laura Zeckendorf; Corporate Chairman Nicholas Luchsinger - Van Cleef & Arpels; Young Patron Chairmen Amanda Brotman, Brie Bythewood, Ann-Marie MacFarlane, William Yang; and The Encore Chairmen Cassel Lessinger, Ann Channing Redpath, Emma Riccardi, and Morgan P. Richardson; created a memorable evening with the proceeds of the Winter Ball used to award scholarships, maintain state-of-the-art studios and a residence hall, and offer vital student programs beyond the studio.

Elegant, sumptuous décor transformed the David H. Koch Theater into the exotic Far East with palm trees, ornamental umbrellas, colorful table linens, candles, and orange poppies. The Winter Ball program began with cocktails, followed by a First Course, a Welcome by Peter Martins, Artistic Director and Chairman of Faculty, a Spotlight Video, and Dinner.

Marjorie Van Dercook, Executive Director of the school, introduced the one-time only performance, listed as the Pièce d'occasion, which was danced by The School of American Ballet advanced students and choreographed by the talented 18-year Silas Farley, who began dancing at age 7, and joined SAB at age 14. Silas Farley is one of a select group of SAB advanced students recently chosen by Peter Martins to begin his professional dance career as an apprentice at the New York City Ballet.

The evening continued with an after party, known as The Encore, which consisted of dessert, dancing, and mingling. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening's program celebrating the achievements of The School of the American Ballet, especially the performance by the students, and we look forward to following the careers of these exceptionally talented young dancers.

Legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and his partner dancer Lisa Rinehart were among the dance world notables, as was New York City Ballet principal dancer Sébastien Marcovici, and Wendy Whelen, Jared Angle, and Janie Taylor, the last three of which attended The School of the American Ballet before joining the New York City Ballet.

"The School of the American Ballet, (SAB), the official training academy of the New York City Ballet, was established in 1934 by legendary choreographer George Balanchine and philanthropist Lincoln Kirstein as the first and most essential step in their quest to create an American classical ballet company."

"SAB, located in New York's Lincoln Center, is the premier ballet academy in the United States, training more students who go on to become professional dancers than any other school, SAB's former students fill the ranks of the New York City Ballet, and other leading U.S. and international ballet companies." Admission to The School of American Ballet is by audition only.
