As our name,The Adventure KidsTM aka Debra C. Argen and Edward F. Nesta, connotes, we love adventures and throughout the years we have had fabulous adventures on the water, under the water, on land, and in the air. There is a thrill of the adrenaline rush that comes with the challenges of new adventures, and after a year of limited adventures due to the pandemic, we were excited to experience The Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

We visited the 5-acre Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum on Saturday, July 24, 2021, which was a beautiful, blue-sky, slighter cooler morning, where the Park offered us the opportunity to explore, hike their trails, and experience over 180 platforms with aerial ropes made with cable, wood, and rope that form bridges, ladders, and 31 zip lines. We could not wait to begin our 3-hour climbing and zipping adventure.

While we thrive on having adventures and our adventurous spirits have taken us around the world to experience adventures on land, on snow, on the water, under the water, and in the air, we take safety seriously, and we appreciated the safety levels at The Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum.

Before we visited the park, we visited their website and watched their videos to get a feel of the adventure experiences as well as their equipment. Although harnesses, clips, and other equipment are provided, the website recommended that visitors bring their own leather-palmed climbing gloves, (which we did), or you may purchase gloves at their shop.

Once we arrived at the park, our adventure began with a Safety training video on how to use their equipment, followed by a staff member quizzing the visitors and answering any questions to ensure that everyone felt comfortable before sending us on to the next step, which was to receive our harness and clips set-up.

After the knowledgeable staff helped us into our harnesses, we moved on to a practice area to familiarize ourselves with using their equipment, which uses an "always locked" clip system.

The Park’s Safety Information

"The safety system of the park is certified by Bornack, the German manufacturer of the equipment. The Park is built and conforms to the standards set by the Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT). The Park is inspected annually by an ACCT-certified inspector."

"Every climber must complete an electronic waiver. For those climbers under the age of 18, parents or legal guardians must complete this electronic form on behalf of the minor. Prior to your visit to the park, use the waiver link in your reservation confirmation email and complete your waiver(s).

If you are bringing a group or party with climbers under the age of 18, please have their parents sign the electronic waiver. This will speed up your group’s check-in process and ensure that all minors will be able to climb."

The Adventure

We were now ready for the fun and games to begin…

The Park offers challenges for all levels of ability from novice to expert, and courses are designated by color: Yellow (easiest), Green, Blue, Black, and Double Black (hardest).

As this was our first time at the park, we began our day of adventure on a green course, which would provide us with plenty of action and introduce us to their course. With (Edward) leading, and (Debra) following, we made our made way across the first challenge, a wood plank bridge best navigated by walking sideways.

Although we have had many aerial experiences, each time that we do these types of adventures, there is always the thrill of the challenge. As the saying goes, taking the first step is the hardest, but with each challenge, we became more confident in our ability.

We crossed aerial bridges made of wood planks that became increasingly more difficult to navigate as we moved from activity to activity along the course. Wide plank bridges became narrower, we walked along narrow planks placed in a zig zag pattern and even climbed through obstacles that challenged our mental acuity on how to navigate as well as our agility.

On aerial courses, there are two challenges, the first is the agility challenge as you make your way across the bridges located high above the ground, the second is the challenge to focus and concentrate solely on the task at hand of carefully placing each foot along the way and not be distracted by the height of the bridge you are walking across or by the beauty of being in nature’s canopy where the dappled light created a magical environment to climb in above the bright, verdantly lush scenery below.

Each bridge that we crossed became slightly more difficult, with narrower wood planks, sometimes angled wood planks, or free-floating bridges, and we felt our confidence level in our ability increase as we met and successfully completed each activity. Soon we were walking on aerial cables like tightrope walkers which provided us with a new thrill. For one of the cable wire challenges, we had to climb through large metal rings in addition to practicing our tightrope walker ability.

By the time we had worked up to the zip-lining activities we were ready, and we happily flew through the air shouting out with glee! We had successfully worked our way through the green course challenges, our confidence in our abilities elevated, and we were ready to do it all again.

After a short break and enjoying our lunch at one of the park’s picnic tables, we climbed back up and proceeded to do the course again! What a thrill as we moved confidently through each of the activities much more quickly and more sure-footed. There is nothing like the thrill of adventure to challenge the mind and body, face your fears, increase your skills and self-confidence in your ability, and our day at The Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum did all that. It was an amazing experience, and we cannot wait to return!
