The Adventure KidsTM aka
Debra C. Argen and Edward F. Nesta had another exciting winter
adventure, this time at Crystal Springs Resort
in Hamburg, New Jersey by going "glice" skating. No
strangers to adventure, throughout the years we have gone paragliding, parasailing,
ridden ATVs, horses, camels, electric bikes, Segways, have surfed, snorkeled,
swam with dolphins, golfed around the world, have done archery, Nordic and
cross-country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, dog sledding, paddleboarding, rappelling, ziplining, raced 4-wheel
and 2-wheel vehicles, gone off-road driving, flown a plane, blown glass, made
silver jewelry, and hold professional level scuba diving titles, yet (Edward)
had never gone ice skating. We decided to remedy this during our stay at
Crystal Springs Resort and went "glice" skating. What fun and another adventure
for the books!

Glice Skating Rink
Crystal Springs Resort
We stayed at Crystal Springs
Resort in early March 2022 and found that there is always something interesting
happening there all day long, every day, in every season. The resort is an
adventure-lovers dream with its three golf courses (Wild Turkey Golf Club, 18-holes,
Course Rating/Slope 75.3/135), Crystal Springs Golf Club, 18-holes, Course
Rating/Slope 73.5/139, and Cascades Golf Club, 9-holes, Course Rating/Slope 37.7/141),
and activities to inspire all ages and abilities according to the season.
During our stay a few of their many activities offered included horseback
riding, hiking, yoga flow, body pump, axe throwing, archery, paint + sip on
canvas, mason jar paint + sip, pony rides, laser clay shooting, wine tasting,
and "glice" skating.

Picking your skates
It was approaching the end of
winter during our stay, and although we had experienced a wide variety of
winter sports adventures throughout the years, (Edward) had never been ice
skating. We decided to remedy that by experiencing what the resort described as
"glice" skating that takes place on a "high performance rink manufactured by
Glice, one of the world's leading producers of Swiss-engineered rinks." Instead
of a using traditional ice rink, the synthetic surface keeps the surface smooth
and allows for a longer outdoor skating season (November - March).

Getting ready
After being fitted for skates in
the Grand Cascades Lodge Pro Shop, we walked the short distance to the attractive
Glice Rink, found a bench, and put on our skates. Although (Debra) had
experience ice skating on traditional ice rinks, we both were novices skating
on the manufactured surface, so we would be learning at the same pace. To get
the feel of having skates on, we first walked around the artificial turf to get
our balance under control before venturing out onto the rink. Once we felt comfortable
in our skates, we gingerly stepped onto the rink. We were now ready for our
skating adventure to begin.
Let the show begin
We started out tentatively by
basically learning to walk with our skates on the surface while holding onto
the railing (with a white knuckle "death grip") as we slowly made our way
around the rink. Gradually, as we became a bit more confident in our abilities we
started straying farther from the railing and started taking longer strides. We were soon joined on the large rink by a
family of two parents with two young children, and it was interesting to see
how each of us approached skating.
Tough day Glice Skating
Over time, we started skating with
some speed and agility feeling more confident in our abilities each time we
rounded the rink, and (Edward) found that (he) could even skate backwards. While
neither of us plan on entering the next winter Olympics to compete in any of
the ice-skating events, we had a fantastic time experiencing "glice" skating at
Crystal Springs Resort and that is what adventures are all about, trying new
things, having fun, and more importantly, making and sharing new memories.
Olympics 20??
See You There!
